CENER BIO2C at the GREEN INNOVATION FORUM 2024

Organized by AseBio, the Spanish Bioindustry Association, and the Government of Navarra through  Sodena, a financial agent of the Government of Navarra, the 5th edition of the AseBio Green Innovation Forum will take place at the Baluarte Convention Center in Pamplona on November 19th, 2024, featuring the participation of CENER and its pilot biorefinery – BIO2C.

The event will showcase the opportunities that biotechnology can offer as a key tool in the transition towards a more sustainable, carbon-neutral, and greener economic model. The event is also firmly committed to achieving the goals set out in the 2030 Agenda and the European Green Deal.

The AseBio Green Innovation Forum will feature a program of roundtable discussions addressing the most relevant aspects of innovation in biotechnology and the green economy. Additionally, bilateral meetings can be scheduled through a partnering platform, and there will be an opportunity to visit the CENER BIO2C biorefinery.

CENER will actively participate in the event, by its Biomass Department which conducts technological development and applied research in the field of biomass, particularly in the development and optimization of bioproducts, solid biofuels, advanced liquid and gaseous biofuels production processes, as well as analyzing different concepts related to biorefineries and their techno-economic and environmental evaluation.

To achieve this, CENER counts with the Biorefinery and Bioenergy Center (BIO2C), which can be visited during the Green Innovation Forum prior registration.

At BIO2C, a semi-industrial pilot-scale testing facility, these processes and technologies are developed, integrating different valorization pathways as an intermediate stage between laboratory and industrial market uptake. These facilities count with pre-treatment units, torrefaction, gasification, hydrolysis, and fermentation reactors, pyrolysis, and hydrothermal liquefaction reactors, enabling the demonstration of the valorization of different biomass types. These can range from agricultural or lignocellulosic residues, agro-industrial and meat wastes, or organic waste of urban origin, to produce advanced biofuels, bio-based polymers, biofertilizers, biostimulants, sustainable sugars, alternative proteins, antioxidants, biomethane, enzymes, biopesticides, electrofuels, among others. Within this center, CENER has the Biotechnological Laboratory (CBL or CENER BiotechLab), which develops applications for the production of advanced biofuels from various carbon sources, such as 2G hydrolysates and renewable gases (synthesis gas and CO2). To this end, synthetic biology and metabolic engineering are employed.
