Comparative techno-economic study on the application of torrefaction vs biomass gasification for the decarbonization of heavy industry furnaces

2024

PROJECT SCOPE & CENER ROLE

The overall objective of this project is to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of two decarbonization options for heavy industry furnaces:

  • The production of torrefied waste biomass and its use as a replacement for petroleum coke in furnace burners.
  • The gasification of waste biomass and the use of the gas generated in furnace burners.

The scope includes:

  • Compositional specification of raw materials.
  • Design bases.
  • Product specification.
  • Description of the processes involved.
  • Material and energy balances.
  • Investment cost study.
  • Operating cost study.
  • Comparative study and sensitivity analysis.
  • Project report.
