BIOOLE-UP. New concept of Biorefinery from olive leaf for advanced medical and nutraceutical treatments.
- 2025-2027

PROJECT SCOPE
The main objective of the project is to develop a biorefinery process from oil sector waste, valorizing olive leaf. Applying a novel technology based on selective cascade extraction together with a subsequent purification of extracts and active principles, in order to test its medical application in advanced treatments for aggressive cancers and chronic diseases such as diabetes and fatty liver. In short:
-
- Residual olive leafs are subjected to a cascade-fractionation process for generation the following fractions: XOS (xylooligosacharides), Poliphenols, Antioxidants and lipids.
- The XOS, polyphenol, antioxidants and lipid fraction will be tested and assessed for their application in chronic diseases such as diabetes and fatty liver
- The polyphenol, antioxidant and lipid fractions will be tested and assayed for their effect in different cancer models.
CENER ROLE
CENER is the coordinator and will be the leader for carrying out the fractionation in cascade of the olive leaf in order to generate the 4 valuable fractions: :
- Xylooligosaccharide (XOS): the fractionation process will be optimized based on the characterization results and its functional assessment as anti-obesogenic treatment.
- Poliphenols and oleuropein: the second fractionation step will also be optimized based on the characterization and its evaluation as anti-adipogenic and/or anti-inflammatory effects as well as for cell reprograming and anti-cancer effects.
- Lipids will be characterized and assessed for anti-adipogenic and/or anti-inflammatory effects as well as for its impact in cancer cells.
- Lignin will be depolymerised and characterized. The final product will be tested as anti-adipogenic and/or anti-inflammatory effects as well as for cell reprograming and anti-cancer effects. .
